Historians have never verified the story and no official records support it, according to the sources I read. The Highland Archives repeated it in a Women's History Month post. The Wikipedia article on the castle has no ghost content but lists it under reportedly haunted locations.
The name and the earl's number change from source to source, and the story is almost identical to the one told of Margaret at Dunrobin Castle, with a stable hand, a banishment, a locked room and a fall. That similarity weakens it as an independent tradition.
