Bewsey Old Hall is a Grade II listed manor house in Warrington. Wikipedia records that Richard Atherton inherited it in 1675 from Dame Margaret Ireland, widow of Gilbert Ireland, and that a new wing was added in the mid 18th century. A local legend says Bonnie Prince Charlie slept there on the retreat from Derby in 1745. The hall was later saved from demolition and its shell converted into apartments.
The ghost stories come from a short piece on Warrington hauntings, quoting two investigators from a local group called Night Vision Investigations. They say rumours of spooky goings on at the hall have circulated for decades, and that it is reputed to house the ghost of a maidservant who was murdered there. The same piece says the house is believed to have inspired the White Rabbit in Lewis Carroll's Alice stories, after tales circulated of a ghostly white rabbit chased by a pack of hounds.
Neither claim is backed in the sources found by a named witness, a date or a contemporary record. The Carroll link in particular is the sort of local attribution that gets made for many Cheshire places, since Carroll was born at nearby Daresbury, and nothing found here shows Carroll himself ever mentioned the hall. It is best read as a local tradition rather than a documented haunting.
