The Kirkpatricks and Closeburn Castle are real, but the swan story is an old family omen tale. Wikipedia's article on the castle does not mention it. The sources disagree on the last occasion: Wood says it was the father's third wedding, while a modern feature says it was Roger's own wedding around 1876. The date should be treated as unknown.
