The farmhouse of Clwchdyrnog was haunted by a spirit that several people had seen but no one had the nerve to speak to. Then John Hughes of Bodedern, a widower, started calling at the house to court one of the servant girls with a view to making her the second Mrs Hughes. One night, while he and the girl were together, there was a great noise in the room, and Hughes, frightened, called on the spirit and asked why it troubled the house.
"Have I done you any wrong?" he asked. "No," it answered. Was the girl the cause? "No." He went through everyone who lived in the house by name, and the answer was always no. So why, he asked, if nobody here has disturbed you, do you come to disturb us? The spirit told him that there was treasure hidden on the south side of Ffynnon Wen, the White Well, and that it belonged to the nine-month-old child in the house. When that was done, it would trouble them no more. It described the exact spot.
The next day Hughes went and dug there and found an iron chest full of gold, silver and other valuables. He handed it all over to the child's parents, who kept it faithfully until their son came of age. The spirit never came back.
