John Abel and the Ghost of Thomas Watkin Lleision

Skewen, near Neath

1758

In 1758 John Abel was troubled by the ghost of his great-uncle, Thomas Watkin Lleision. The spirit kept pestering him until he followed it, and it eventually led him to some money that had been hidden away.

This is a common pattern in Welsh ghost lore of the period, where a restless spirit cannot settle until something left undone in life, very often buried money, has been put right. The eighteenth century date and the specific names suggest the story comes from one of the collections of Welsh apparitions compiled by ministers at that time, though the Great British Ghost Tour does not give its source.

It is recorded as a traditional account with a date and names, but without enough detail to test.

Skewen is a large village west of Neath; the house is not identified.
