The witness was taking a walk with dogs through woodland early one morning while staying near Coldingham, and about thirty feet ahead saw what was first taken for a wolf, and then for a collie. It paused for a few seconds. It had no muzzle in the way a dog does, moved like a cat, and carried something dangling in its mouth. It disappeared quietly into the undergrowth. The witness described it as about the size of a collie, with silver grey, black and white markings, a rough of grey and white fur round its face and no visible tail.
Next morning a completely stripped carcass of a very young deer was seen at the roadside, only head and hooves left. The witness concluded the animal was a lynx, Eurasian or Canadian. An earlier sighting from about 1970 is also listed in the archive for the Borders. There is no photograph or physical evidence.
