The man reached the place about midnight and was joined by the rider, who spoke no word and accompanied him for nearly three miles to the Round House, a building for the farm servants of Breachacha Castle. Whenever the man tried to enter any house on the way, the horseman came between him and the door. At the Round House the cock crew and the horseman disappeared over the gate in a flame of fire. The man was lifted into the house pouring with sweat and fainting.
The account is a single anecdote about an unnamed traveller. It sits among Campbell's list of haunted roads and fords, which he explains as the product of accumulated rumour and lonely places.
