The Phantom Ships on the Grey Cairn Moor

Grey Cairn moor, near Cromarty

Traditional; told by Miller in 1835

Miller offers his own experience as the natural explanation for the fisherman's vision, an optical effect of the aurora on the moor. The Grey Cairn also appears as the place where the miller of Resolis was found dead in another story in the same book. See the Maolbuie moor record.
