The Diamond Rock of the Sutors

Eastern cliffs of the South Sutor, Cromarty

Traditional; told by Miller in 1835

The cliffs are Old Red Sandstone, which Hugh Miller knew better than anyone, and a glint of mica or quartz in the rock catching a sunset might account for a light. His chapter gives it as a local legend without a natural explanation. The guardian hand is the traditional form of such stories: a treasure that vanishes if you mark it.
