The book also records that old residents remembered fields now under the sea. Elspat Hood, who died in 1701 at a reported age of 120, was said to remember cornfields where the Clach Malacha now stands in the water. Donald Miller, a shoemaker turned engineer, built sea walls against the storm. Thomas the Rhymer is credited with many prophecies across Scotland, and this one is one of several for the northern firths.
