The Highlander Who Whispers 'Defeated'

Culloden Battlefield, Culloden Moor

Since the 1746 battle

The battle left about 1,500 Jacobite casualties in under an hour, and the site is treated as a grave. The ghost stories are repeated widely but none of the sources names a witness or a date. Some of the story may come from the novels and television series set at Culloden, which brought many visitors and made the site a focus for supernatural tales.

Please treat the site with respect: the clan graves are war graves.

The battlefield is managed by the National Trust for Scotland; the moor is open to walkers, with paid entry for the visitor centre.
