The Culross Witches and the West Kirk Sabbath

Culross Town House and the old West Kirk

1675; wider accusations across the 16th and 17th centuries

A bronze plaque on the village green in Culross, facing the Town House where the accused were held, is decorated with 32 crosses for the accused and reads that they were innocent victims of unenlightened times. Wikipedia's article on Culross says the West Kirk fell out of use before 1633 and was the alleged meeting place of the four women executed in 1675.

Modern visitor pages say ghosts of tortured Culross witches have been reported at Culross Palace, which is recorded separately. The 1675 confessions came from women in custody and should be read as forced accounts.

The Town House is on the village green; the plaque is outside.
