The Darlington Sky Lights

Darlington, County Durham

13 March 2025

On Thursday 13 March 2025, Danny Shaw, from nearby Newton Aycliffe, happened to look up and spot a group of flashing lights moving across the sky above Darlington, close enough and strange enough that he immediately reached for his phone and filmed the sighting rather than simply watching it pass, later posting the video to Reddit for others to see and discuss for themselves.

Shaw described the lights afterward as something he had genuinely never seen before, and said his first, entirely reasonable assumption was that he was watching a large aircraft on its approach to Teesside International Airport, a plausible explanation for lights in that particular stretch of sky. He ruled that possibility out for himself, though, once the lights drew closer and their movement and overall pattern stopped matching anything a conventional aircraft would do, a shift specific enough to convince him that whatever he was filming was not simply a plane coming in to land.

No official investigation or explanation appears to have followed the sighting in any capacity, and it remains, as of the time of writing, an unverified single video report rather than anything more formally examined. County Durham has an active local UFO-spotting community that shares and discusses sightings exactly like this one online, and reports of unexplained lights in the sky above the county turn up periodically, of which Danny Shaw's March 2025 footage is simply the most recent, and most widely circulated, example available at the time this entry was written.
