Witchcraft

The Burning of Janet Horne at Littletown

Littletown, Dornoch

June 1727

She is described in Wikipedia as the last person executed legally for witchcraft in the British Isles. Parliament repealed the witchcraft statutes nine years later, in 1736. The reported remark about the fire is part of the tradition and may reflect either her dementia or the storyteller's wish to underline it.

The record is kept as documented for the trial and the burning, with the details of tar, barrel and fire as the traditional account.

The Witch's Stone is in Littletown, on the south side of Dornoch.
