Lulworth Castle Grey Lady and the 1929 fire

Lulworth Castle, East Lulworth

Centuries old tradition; 1929 fire

Lulworth Castle in East Lulworth is a 17th century house built as a hunting lodge, gutted by fire in 1929. Visit Wareham says its Grey Lady has haunted the castle for centuries.

The signature story is from the fire. Firefighters reportedly saw a woman screaming and waving for help at an upper window despite the floor having collapsed hours earlier. Tess of the Vale tells the same tale and says she then vanished. Visit Wareham also reports visitors feeling anxiety and depression, especially in the kitchen.

The fire is a real documented event. The Grey Lady is only claimed, with no name, and I could not find a firefighter account or press report of the screaming figure. The Durdle Door dancing girls story, already on this site, is linked by some to maidservants from the same fire. The shell of the castle is now an English Heritage property.
