The Grey Lady of Gosford Castle

Gosford Castle, Markethill, County Armagh

Undated; castle built in the 19th century

Gosford Castle, near Markethill, was built in the 19th century for the Acheson family, Earls of Gosford, and has since served as an army barracks, a prison and, more recently, apartments. Spirited Isle says it is believed haunted by several spirits, chiefly a Grey Lady who roams the corridors near the old nursery and the tower. Staff and visitors are said to have reported cold spots, unexplained noises and a spectral figure. An anonymous resident of the converted apartments also submitted two personal experiences to the directory, which are not repeated here.

Spooky Isles tells it as the Green Lady of Gosford. Her name is not known. In this telling she was a young woman working in the Acheson household who fell in love with the son and bore his child. The family tried to avoid scandal by turning mother and child out, and both died of exposure. She is said to be seen on some evenings moving through the gardens looking for shelter and her lost love.

No document is cited for the servant story, and the difference in colour between the two sources suggests a floating legend rather than a firm local tradition.

Converted to private apartments; the demesne is a public forest park.
