The Ghost and the Spectral Pipes of Dunbar Castle

Also known as: Black Aggie

Dunbar Castle

Undated reports

The listing gives the earl's ghost the name Black Aggie, which appears to be a muddle, since Black Agnes was Patrick's wife, Agnes Randolph, who defended the castle against an English siege in 1338. Wikipedia describes that siege and the later history of the castle, which Parliament ordered demolished in December 1567 after Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated at Carberry Hill.

The ruins sit on rocks beside Dunbar harbour. No witness or date is given for either haunting, and the pipes may be a familiar coastal sound carried on the wind. The pin is set on the ruin.

Check current access to the ruin before visiting; it can be viewed from the harbour area.
