The Grieving Mother of Upper Dunmurry Lane

Upper Dunmurry Lane, Drumbeg

1970s onwards

Since the 1970s a quiet stretch of Upper Dunmurry Lane in Drumbeg has been associated with an apparition. Witnesses report a withered, grief-stricken woman cradling a small child, who appears suddenly on or near the roadside before fading into the darkness.

The local explanation is an old legend that a highwayman operated in the district and was captured and hanged for his crimes at a spot near the lane. Overwhelmed by despair, his wife is said to have killed their child and then herself. Her spirit is believed to wander the road, still holding the child.

Whether this is folklore or something else, it is the sort of origin story often given to a road ghost after the sightings began.
