In Shakespeare's play, an apparition tells Macbeth he shall not be vanquished until 'Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill shall come against him.' That is fiction, and it should not be taken as recorded folklore. The Gaelic name is said to mean the hill of ants, possibly for the many people needed to build the fort. A steep signed path climbs from Collace.
