The Crusader and the She-Devil Who Gave the Flag

Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye

Told about 1800

With a piece of the True Cross and the hermit's directions the MacLeod defeated the spirit, called Nein a Phaipen, or the Daughter of Thunder, a she-devil. In return for passing on certain secrets to her friends, she told him the future of his clan. She also gave him her girdle and told him to make it a banner, and he used his spear as the pole.

The writer says the spear and the secrets were lost, and offers his own view that the flag most probably began as a banner used in the Holy Land and was brought home by that crusader. He adds that when the flag was shown the third time it would vanish.
