Ebbw Vale grew almost from nothing in the 19th century around its ironworks and later its great steelworks. St John's Church and the stream that once drove a mill are among the older parts of the town.
The ghost is a young woman with a baby in her arms. Witnesses describe her as a white, misty form, walking steadily along the path beside the millstream. Where the stream bends near a bridge, she disappears. She has also been seen beyond the bridge, walking straight through the church gates while they were closed. No story explains who she was, and the source marks the report unconfirmed.
The Great British Ghost Tour lists two other Ebbw Vale hauntings. In the 1930s a family in one of two isolated cottages high on the mountainside at Waun Lwyd shared their home with a "heavy, dark mass" that brought a feeling of depression and tugged at the bedclothes at night, until it drove them out. And in the 1980s the South Wales Argus reported that staff at the Berlei underwear factory blamed a ghost called Charlie, whose favourite trick was switching off the lights when someone went to the toilet.
