Carlos, the Spanish Soldier of Eilean Donan

Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Duich

1719; reports undated

Wikipedia confirms the history. An advance party of 300 Spanish soldiers under the Earl Marischal arrived in Loch Duich in April 1719 and occupied the castle. On 10 May three Royal Navy frigates bombarded it, and the next day a landing party took it, finding a captain, a Spanish lieutenant, a sergeant, a Scottish rebel and 39 Spanish soldiers inside, with 343 barrels of powder.

Popular ghost lists add that the soldier carries his head under his arm. No dated sighting or named witness for that detail was found, so the official footsteps are the best supported part of the story.

Eilean Donan Castle is open to visitors for an admission charge, linked to the shore by a bridge.
