Folklore & legend

The Three Brothers and the Seal Maidens

Loch Duich, near Eilean Donan

Undated legend

The outcomes differed. The youngest brother, overcome with remorse, returned his love's skin, and as a reward she continued to visit him every nine days. The second maiden found her skin and escaped back into the loch. The eldest brother, trying to stop his love going back, tried to burn her skin, and burned her too.

The story belongs to the widespread selkie type. No older source for the Loch Duich version is named on the page.

Eilean Donan Castle is open to visitors for an admission charge, linked to the shore by a bridge.
