The Cursed Sillees River

Sillees River near Derrygonnelly

Tradition; undated

The Lough Erne Pilgrim Way describes the legend of St Faber and the Sillees River in County Fermanagh. When her sacred books were lost to the river, she cursed it. A castle vanished. The river is not safe for bathing and not good for fishing, and it flows against the hill.

The summary is very brief and gives no longer text, so I have not added to it. Curses laid by saints on rivers and lakes are a recurring type in Irish tradition, often tied to a theft or an insult. The Sillees runs through the Derrygonnelly area, and the pin is set on it.
