The Gallan Whale

Gallan Head, Uig, west Lewis

Reported c. 1695 of c. 1680

The natives told him that about 15 years earlier this great whale had overturned a fisherman's boat and eaten three of the crew. The fourth man was saved by another boat that happened to be near and saw the accident. Martin gives no names and he did not see the whale himself.

It is a sea-monster report from the late seventeenth century, with the sort of detail a fisherman's account would give. A large whale overturning a small boat is not impossible, though the account is second-hand. Gallan Head is the headland at the north of the Uig coast.
