Thomas Catleugh said the animal was about twenty inches high with a long body and a tail about three feet long, dark grey with a dark sheen along its back. He watched it move stealthily towards the sheep, crouching down on its forelegs. The sheep moved away and the animal lay down. Its large rounded ears lay back on its head and its jaw constantly opened and closed. He was less than forty feet away and had a good view, but no car passed by and he did not raise the alarm.
The Scottish Big Cats site gives the report under the heading The Beast of Lammermuir, from Ronnie Patterson's collection. No kill or trace is recorded. Later reports around Haddington, Ormiston and Dunbar in 2001 and 2002 used the same name.
The pin is placed on Garvald and is approximate.
