Two guides give slightly different versions of the boy. One describes a mischievous page who was forgotten outdoors on a cold night. The other only says a young servant is seen near the Queen's room and nowhere else in the castle. Neither offers a named witness, a date or a source record of the death.
The Dundee and Angus Chamber, promoting the castle's Hallowe'en tours, also mentions a mischievous servant boy who trips guests. It is a modern reputation and is presented here as such.
