Granny Kempock Stone

Also known as: Kempock Stone; The Long Stone

Kempock Street, Gourock

Bronze Age stone; rituals recorded from the 1600s to the 1800s

The stone stands in a small residential street above the Clyde. It has been used for luck rituals and has a link to the last major Inverkip witch trial, described in the entries for Marie Lamont and the Inverkip witch hunts. A children's television series called Shadow of the Stone dramatised the legend in 1987.

The ritual accounts are from nineteenth century antiquarian writing, and the witch story rests on the 1662 confessions.
