Robert Clapperton, aged 72, of Monkrigg Place saw the beast on a Wednesday afternoon. He said it roamed the grass in front of his house and wandered off. It was light brown with a long black mane, which is an odd match for a puma or black panther and one of the reasons the reports are only loosely connected.
In May 2002 the retired rope maker Douglas Ross, of Dalkeith, was driving to Haddington at about six in the evening when a black animal, very low to the ground and moving in a distinctly cat-like way, ran across the road at the entrance to Stevenson House. He said it was about as long as a deer, and that his son had seen the creature at the same spot months earlier. Local coverage speculated about the safety of children in the area. Experts consulted at the time thought a large feral cat might be responsible.
