King Charles II Pub Cellar Figure, Ross-on-Wye

Also known as: The Charlie; Ross cellar ghost photograph

King Charles II pub, Ross-on-Wye

Photograph late 1970s; reported 2003

The King Charles II is a listed pub in Ross-on-Wye known locally as the Charlie. A page on the Science of Ghosts blog describes a photograph taken in the cellar in the late 1970s by the landlady at the time, Vi Boler, during routine cellar work, before she sold the pub in 1981. It shows beer barrels and, against the left wall, a yellowish, semi-transparent humanoid figure.

The investigator Barry Fitzpatrick looked into the picture around the start of the 2000s and is reported to have found no sign of a double exposure or tampering. The blog says the investigator's society verified the original negative. The Hereford Times published an article on the investigation on 16 January 2003, which is quoted as saying a landlord kept finding old coins in the cellar and former cooks complained about things moving about in the kitchen.

Other reported phenomena are gas cylinders turning themselves off, barrels moved without explanation, and a section of the cellar without electricity because of damp. Some retellings say the cellar was part of a tunnel used to move prisoners, but I could not verify that. The location of the negative is unclear and the photograph has circulated online. I have not seen the original, so this is a single report with a photograph that cannot be checked, and it is tagged single_report. The pin is on Ross-on-Wye town.

Working pub; the cellar is not open to the public.
