The coachman of the Harrow Inn, Wanborough

Also known as: Harrow and Kings Head

The Harrow Inn, High Street, Lower Wanborough

Undated, 18th century coaching era

A Wiltshire Gazette and Herald feature on haunted pubs names the Harrow Inn at Wanborough as one of the oldest pubs in the Swindon area, with parts dating to before 1740, when it was the Harrow and Kings Head. It was built as a coaching inn on the Roman road to London and still operates as an inn.

The paper says the inn is haunted by a friendly spirit of a one time coachman. The story is that he crashed his coach right outside the inn, killing himself and his passengers, and that his apparition is now seen with some regularity walking around the dining room.

The feature gives no date for the crash, no names and no witness accounts, and it notes it was written by American colleagues in a syndication arrangement, so it is a light popular source. No record of such a coaching accident was found in the sources read, so the crash should be treated as part of the pub's tradition. The pin is a geocoder match for the inn.
