Hauntings

Screams, a Figure at the Window and an Unseen Push at Hermitage

Hermitage Castle, Liddesdale

Modern reports, undated

Two roundups list Hermitage as haunted by the cries of the victims of Lord Soulis and by other spectral figures. A visitor report on Mysterious Britain adds detail. During repairs, a workman told the writers he had seen a figure at one of the upper windows while the castle was empty, and the writers note that the upper floors no longer exist, so nobody could have been standing there. The custodian described several strange happenings and odd visitors drawn by the castle's reputation, and one visitor complained of being pushed by an unseen force near the drowning pool by the chapel.

These are anecdotes without dates or named witnesses. The Soulis story that supplies the screams is itself legend, and history records only that he died in prison.

Hermitage Castle is a Historic Environment Scotland site; opening times vary by season.
