Anne Whateley's Ghost, Hilborough Manor

Hilborough Manor, Bidford-on-Avon

reference dated November 1582

Hilborough Manor near Bidford-on-Avon is associated with the ghost, or at the very least a strongly felt presence, of Anne Whateley, a name that appears in the Worcester diocesan register in November 1582 as having been granted a licence to marry a man named William Shakespeare, just one single day before a separate bond was issued authorising William Shakespeare's actual marriage to the pregnant Anne Hathaway instead. Whether this Whateley represented a simple clerical error, referred to an entirely different William Shakespeare altogether, or was, however briefly, genuinely the playwright's own intended bride before Hathaway's pregnancy forced a sudden change of plans, has been argued over by dedicated Shakespeare scholars for well over a century now, without ever reaching any firm resolution.

The ghost story attached to Hilborough draws directly and deliberately on that unresolved historical puzzle, with local tradition here identifying the presence felt within the house specifically as Whateley herself, cast in the retelling as a woman whose own place in Shakespeare's life was quietly written over and erased by the wider course of history that followed.

This stands as a genuinely rare case within this county's whole paranormal record where the haunting itself and a real, still actively debated piece of serious Shakespeare scholarship are directly entangled with one another, Hilborough Manor's own ghost story drawing its considerable interest not from any invented tragedy but from an authentic, centuries-old question that professional historians themselves have never managed to fully settle.
