The Beheading Pit at Finlarig Castle

Finlarig Castle, near Killin

17th-century legend

Sources are frank that the pit is probably no such thing. It almost certainly served as a tank to catch water running off the roof, as the castle had no well. Folklore has chosen the more dramatic reading. Black Duncan had a real reputation for ruthlessness: he is accused of arranging the murder of Campbell of Cawdor and of trying to have the MacGregors outlawed so that he could take their land.

I found no ghost story tied to the castle and have kept this as an execution legend.
