Hauntings

The Ghost That Obeyed the Duke of Argyll

Road through the Kilmartin and Kilmichael district

Undated

The public road through the district was once infested by a ghost that caused considerable terror. A man was got to lay it. He exorcised it in the name of Peter and Paul and John and all the most powerful saints, but it never moved. At last he called out peremptorily, 'In the name of the Duke of Argyle, I tell you to get out of there immediately.' The ghost disappeared at once and was never seen again.

It is a humorous tale with a political point and is probably as old as the Campbell dukedom. Campbell says the district is known locally as Argyle, and that people on Loch Awe side say of a man going down past Ford that he is going down to Argyle.
