The Ghost Piper of Duntrune Castle

Duntrune Castle, Loch Crinan

1644 setting; modern reports

The Haunted Rooms article says that when the Campbells recaptured the castle from the MacDonald warrior Colkitto they severed the piper's hands as punishment for warning their enemy, and he bled to death. It says visitors have seen the solitary spectral figure of a piper on the battlements at night and heard his tune echoing round the loch. Other retellings name the tune as the Piper's Warning and say the piper deliberately played it wrongly to alert his chief when ships appeared. Wikipedia's list of reportedly haunted places in Scotland includes Duntrune.

The castle is a private home. The history of 1644 is documented, the piper and his fate are tradition.
