The Voice on the Hill between Lezayre and Sulby

Hill opposite a roadside cottage between Lezayre churchtown and Sulby

A few years before Gill wrote, an English nurse was on holiday in the north of the island, staying at a cottage beside the road between Lezayre churchtown and Sulby. One evening she climbed the hill opposite the cottage.

Partway up, she heard a voice say "Good night!" quite clearly. Then again, and a third time. There was no one to be seen. She felt nervous and cold, and came back down. When she told her hostess, the woman said the hill had a reputation for being haunted. Gill heard it from a friend of the hostess.

The hill is not identified; the Sulby road is public.
