The Drover of Garden Lane, Llandovery

Also known as: The spirit of the drover

Garden Lane, Llandovery

Llandovery, in the upper Tywi valley, was one of the great droving towns of Wales. For centuries drovers gathered cattle there before walking them over the hills to the English fairs, and in 1799 a Llandovery drover, David Jones, founded the Bank of the Black Ox, whose notes carried a black bullock.

Nick Brunger records a sighting in the town that fits that history. On a light summer evening a witness walking on Garden Lane saw ahead of them a man dressed as a drover of the old days. The figure turned in to a yard. When the witness followed moments later, the yard was empty and there was no way the man could have left without being seen. Months later, the same witness saw the same figure in the same place, and again it disappeared.

There is no name for the witness and no further detail. It is recorded as a single report, notable mainly for how neatly it matches the town's droving past.

Garden Lane is a public street in Llandovery town.
