The Workhouse Warden of the Model House, Llantrisant

Also known as: Llantrisant Union Workhouse

The Model House, Bull Ring, Llantrisant

Llantrisant's Bull Ring is the old heart of the hilltop town, where the bulls were once baited, and it now holds the statue of Dr William Price. On one side stands the Model House. It was built as the Union Workhouse, a place meant to turn the poor into models of Christian virtue, which is said to be where the name comes from. When it closed as a workhouse it became in turn a boarding house, an inn and a general store, and today it is a craft and design centre.

Dean Powell, a Llantrisant-born historian who has written more than twenty books on local history and started the town's ghost walks in 2017, gathered its supernatural stories in Ghostly Tales of Llantrisant, published in 2021. According to the publicity for the book, reported by Nation.Cymru, the Model House has a ghost from its workhouse days: the warden, whose footsteps can still be heard in the upper rooms.

The book also mentions a child's spirit whose "vacant eyes look across the Bull Ring from a shop window". Which shop is not specified in the summary, so it is included here with the Model House, which faces the same square.

These stories come from a single modern book that draws, its author says, on history books, newspaper reports, archive material and interviews with local residents. The summaries do not say which.

The Model House is a craft centre open to visitors during business hours; the Bull Ring is public space.
