The Fairy Queen of Eilean Suainne

Eilean Suainne, Loch Maree

1823

The queen sat under a tree on a little island in a little loch inside the island and gathered kain, a tribute, for the evil one. One of the boatmen added that for certain the fairies had not left the district yet.

Dixon confirms the geography. Eilean Suainne is the largest island in Loch Maree, nearly a mile long, with a small loch inside it holding two small islands, one carrying a large fir tree under which the fairies were said to assemble.

An island in Loch Maree reached only by boat.
