Irene of Eel Pie Island

Eel Pie Island, Twickenham

Reported since the 1950s

Eel Pie Island in the Thames at Twickenham was known for its club, a favourite meeting place in the 1950s and after. Spooky Isles says a ghost dubbed Irene has been wandering the narrow lanes there since that decade.

She is thought to be an unfortunate victim of a killer who stalked young women as they left the nightclub. In the story, Irene was strangled on the pathways, and her ghost has been seen all over the island searching for her way home. Her murder has never been solved.

The article names no date, no police case and no source for the murder, and a victim story with a first name only is a feature of many local ghost traditions. It is recorded here as a local tradition, with an approximate pin on the island.

The island is reached by a footbridge from Twickenham; most of it is private.
