The Bride in the Window, Bishop Street

Bishop Street, Derry

1940s

Peter McCartney's 1993 compendium of Derry ghost stories, Parade of Phantoms, is the source for a haunting in Bishop Street in the 1940s that ended in an exorcism. It is summarised by the Derry Journal and by Spirited Isle.

The building was said to be haunted by a young bride-to-be who had died before her wedding day. Years later a young couple moved in. A girl walking past thought she saw a slim figure in a white dress at one of the windows and crossed the street for a closer look. Suddenly the figure pressed its face against the glass, and she saw not a serene bride but a leering, malevolent face. The girl was badly shaken. An exorcism was eventually performed, and the house was later demolished.

The Derry Journal's headings call it the demon bride of Bishop Street. No names or exact address are given, and the building no longer stands.
