Maggie Murphy's Lane

Maggie Murphy's Lane, Kilfennan to Nelson Drive, Derry

1880s

Maggie Murphy's Lane runs from Kilfennan down to Nelson Drive in the east of Derry. The Derry Journal says it is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of a young Maggie Murphy, her lover and her enraged father. In the legend, Maggie and her star-crossed lover, a farmhand from an unsuitable background, died in tragic circumstances in the 1880s. Her father also perished in the incident. All three are said to haunt the lane.

No detail of how they died is given, and I could not find a contemporary record. The lane's name preserves the story.
