The Woman in Black on the Convent of Mercy Stairs

Former Convent of Mercy, Pump Street, Derry

After 2005

Spirited Isle says the old convent in Derry began as the King's Arms Hotel in 1780, became a college in 1846 and then passed to the Sisters of Mercy, who stayed until 2005. It is now in a poor state.

Shortly after the nuns left, workmen on renovations began to encounter strange things. The nuns had slept in small rooms on the top floor, and some workers found an oppressive presence there, sometimes so strong that they had to leave the space. In the former refectory a carpet layer working alone had his head suddenly pushed down towards the floor by unseen hands. A tall woman dressed in black was also seen standing on the stairs.
