Mary Ann Knox and the Coach in the Tower Museum

Tower Museum, Derry

Modern reports; story from the 1760s

The Tower Museum in Derry, according to Spirited Isle, has long been associated with a tragic 18th-century tale, and many visitors believe the building is home to the restless spirit of Mary Ann Knox, shot dead by John MacNaghten, the man rumoured to have been her secret lover. The page gives the historic account as the 19th century, which is an error; the Prehen story belongs to the early 1760s.

The museum displays several old vehicles, including what is said to be the second oldest surviving coach in Ireland. Staff and visitors say it is this coach that Mary Ann seems most drawn to. People report an unexplained chill near it and a feeling that someone is standing just behind them when no one is. The page also says the museum has displayed visitor photographs in which a strange mist appears inside the coach, with shapes that were not seen at the time.

The link between the coach and Mary Ann is not explained, and the entry gives no dates, but it shows how the Prehen tragedy has attached itself to nearby objects. See the Prehen House record for the core story.
