The Vaults, Malpas

Undated

Malpas, a small market town close to the Welsh border in the south-west of Cheshire, has a modest but distinct cluster of ghost stories, and its pub, the Vaults, carries the most concretely described of them. Staff there report a presence heard moving around the building after closing, opening and closing doors with no one visible to account for it, alongside smaller-scale disturbances: objects that go missing or turn up moved, and taps that switch on and off by themselves.

Running alongside the Vaults story, but not clearly connected to it in the sources available, is a separate and darker piece of town folklore concerning a woman named Sylvia, said to have been strangled to death somewhere else in Malpas. No date, context, or further detail accompanies her story, and it isn't tied explicitly to any haunting or apparition — it exists as a grim fragment of local memory rather than a full ghost story in its own right. Both pieces are recorded here honestly as thin, loosely connected local traditions rather than combined into a single narrative the sources don't actually support.
