Milntown sits in its gardens off the Lezayre road just outside Ramsey. The estate was founded by the McCrystyn family, later the Christians, in the early sixteenth century, and they held it for centuries. Parts of the house are that old, though most of what you see today dates from a remodelling in the 1830s.
It is often described as the most haunted house on the Isle of Man, and the story given is of two ghosts. One is a former lady of the house. The other is described as malevolent and aggressive, a presence that likes to scare visitors. The sightings are said to be concentrated in the main part of the house.
That is about as far as the published accounts go. There are no names or dates attached, and the stories come mainly from tourism and blog writing. The house's long ownership by the Christians, a family bound up in some of the island's darkest political history, may have helped the reputation along. The road corner outside the gates has a better-documented ghost tradition of its own, set out in a separate record.
