Moresby Hall, a seventeenth-century house near Whitehaven built close to the site of the Roman fort of Gabrosentum, has one of the more genuinely layered ghost rosters found anywhere in Cumbria, plausibly reflecting the site's own genuinely long span of documented occupation and conflict stretching back across nearly two thousand years. Reports include three separate Roman soldiers, tied directly to the fort's ancient military history; a Jacobite rebel, consistent with the house's own documented period during the eighteenth-century Jacobite risings; and a Cavalier from the English Civil War era, described in the more benign tellings as moving harmlessly on the staircase rather than presenting any threat to those who encounter him. A child's presence is also sometimes reported alongside these more historically specific figures.
Separately from these named historical figures, dark, undefined shapes are described sitting quietly on furniture within the hall, and children's wailing has been reported echoing through the building at various times, adding a further, considerably less identifiable layer to the house's already crowded haunted reputation.
No documented incident, no named witness, and no specific date has ever been traced connecting any of these individual figures to a genuinely verified historical event, and the roster is recorded here simply as it stands, a set of loosely connected traditions that remain entirely plausible in outline given the site's real, considerable historical depth, but which are not independently confirmed in any single case, Moresby Hall's various ghosts spanning nearly two millennia of documented British history without any one of them actually being pinned down.
