The Lady Well of Motherwell

Ladywell Road, Motherwell

Medieval; name tradition

Holy wells named for Mary or a saint were widely visited in medieval Scotland for cures, and were often suppressed after the Reformation, so a later loss of the site is what one would expect. The source gives no cures or miracles for this well, and the derivation of the town's name from it is a tradition and not a proven etymology.
