Lough Shannagh lies high in the Mournes. The story told of it is that Sheelagh, a skilled horsewoman and the daughter of a clan chief, was hunting a fox when mist came down and she was separated from the others. The fox ran into the lough and Sheelagh followed on her horse, but could not escape the deepening water and drowned along with her horse. The search party never found her. The lough has been called Lough Shannagh, the Lough of the Fox, ever since. When the mist returns, people claim to see the woman on her horse chasing the fox into the lough.
